you guys do know that exo cages are illegal on the street right. For that matter any modification of bumpers to make them stronger will cause more damage and possibly injury to other drivers if an accident occurs. and therefor is an unsafe vehichle.

Hmm I couldn't find that in the ORC. Could you point it out? http://codes.ohio.gov/orc

It would be nice to know if all of us having heavier bumpers, tube fenders, rock sliders, etc. was illegal like you say.

The laws are always allowed to be bent. You can always prove that a exo cage is not a bumper. Bumpers are located on the
front and rear of any car or truck. The side tubes can be called steps and the top can be simply
a roll bar like most pickup trucks have and those are allowed. Ours are just tied into the frame.
Have you seen bumpers that they sell that are perfectly legal that are made of 1/4" steel? I know since
I have truck plates on my jeep that my bumpers can be taller that regular cars or trucks so can my headlights
too. The plates cost more but I have no e check and more room to build. I admit I have been pulled over
for driving my jeep in the city a few times but just got fix it tickets that were throw out in court.

i will look for it. If i remember correctly that us why most offroad bumpers come with a warning that they are for offraod use only because the maker doesnt want responsibility of injury to another motorist. With that said i have a 1/4 bumper with a 3/8 winch plate.

I'd be very interested if Sgt. Dave would weigh in on this legality issue, please. No one around here seems to know if the modifications I have in mind would make the vehicle illegal to drive on the street.....

chris there is no law that specifically states that. the law it falls under is unsafe vehichle. It states that no vehichle should put its driver, passenger or any other motorist in danger. Now that is completly up to the officer if he is going to inforce it. It kind of a dicrestionary law.

George, every state has it's own laws regarding what is and what is not allowed on the roads. What is/is not legal in Ohio means nothing in Florida.

Absolutely, brother - and great point, by the way. The issue down here is that pretty much EVERY issue has a vast gray area - speeding, theft, shootings, etc. The Miami PD that I was (barely) able to speak to about it had no idea. Granted, their English was limited

My research continues on the legality. My initial question, however, had nothing to do with legality - I asked if anyone had any ideas and if the pic that I posted seemed reasonably do-able. I'd like to get back to the design and function of the exo, if we could.

What makes a good cage? Things to limit, besides weight and sharp angles? Best material for the buck? Any proven designs out there that are the "industry standard"? Things to stay away from? Let me know!

Steve that's pretty funny Please think before offering out advice.. There are bumper height standards but nowhere are there any laws stating that you can not run a stronger then factory bumper.

Now in some states like Virgina you are not allowed to alter factory equipment to lighten or weaken, disconnect factory safety equipment(ie airbag sensors) But if you do some homework there are ways to keep the safety equipment and mount it to aftermarket bumpers

Using your logic My plow rig could kill ya coming and going with the 1/4in plate bed and 1/2in frame work that the factory mounted or the 3/8in frame on my plow with the 3/4 in cutting edge.

On another note please feel free to use your computers spell check when posting it gives an air of legitimacy to the poster even if the advice offered is flawed

thats exactly my point bill if you change a bumper and it is storonger/ weaker then factory, you have altered the truck in a non safe way which is illegal same thing for a cage. I know your junk is so old they didnt even think of an airbag yet but on the trucks equiped with one it is illegal.

Steve I kind of follow your logic, but if you take it a step further you can't upgrade tires wheels or axles. What about a trailer hitch if your vehicle didn't come with one. I have been writing tickets for 20 plus years and have never written a citation for a bumper change or a roll bar or cage.I have not even heard of someone being cited around here. The ORC has many written sections that are there for providing definitions only there has to be a penalty section at the end or it is not a writable offence. I do agree that you should never disable safety features that are factory installed. But we regularly remove sway bars, disable or remove emission equipment and converters. We add headers that are labeled off road use only. But I do not think there are many officers that would write tickets for an external cage or a winch bumper.

If you are going EXO cage dont waste your cash on DOM run sch40. Yea, I know, I just started a big fight. But I have seen what happens to both after a nasty roll (or 20).
